Comparing Drawer Runners: Blum and DTC
A brand name alone does not identify a drawer runner. Compare the exact model and configuration against the drawer it needs to fit.

Quick Answer
For homeowners comparing cabinetry quotes: ask each supplier to identify the runner manufacturer, exact series or model, mounting style, extension, motion feature and rated capacity.
Blum and DTC both offer more than one hardware family. Their names do not establish that two quoted runners have the same construction, fit or specification.
Why Runner Choice Matters
The selected runner affects how a drawer is supported and guided, how far it extends, which motion features are available, and the dimensions required for fitting. The appropriate choice depends on the drawer construction, intended contents, cabinet design and exact product specification.
Performance and rated capacity vary by model and configuration. Broad claims about a brand, price tier or room type cannot replace the manufacturer’s instructions for the runner named in the quote.
Compare the Product Family and Exact Model
These are examples of distinct product families, not a ranking or a complete catalogue. Confirm the current model documentation for the product actually specified.
| Detail to check | Blum example | DTC examples |
| Product family | TANDEM is a concealed runner system for wood drawers. | D-MOTION is a concealed slide family; SUPER-RAIL is a side-mount ball-bearing family. |
| Mounting and extension | Options depend on the selected TANDEM model and configuration. | Mounting and extension depend on the selected DTC family and model. |
| Motion feature | Some TANDEM configurations use BLUMOTION soft-close; other motion options vary by model. | Motion options vary by DTC model; check whether the specified version is soft-close, push-open or another configuration. |
| Rated capacity | Use the rating for the exact model, length and configuration in the current manufacturer documentation. | Do not apply one capacity to all DTC slides; use the rating for the exact model and configuration. |
| Fit | Follow the model-specific drawer dimensions, clearances and installation instructions. | Follow the model-specific drawer dimensions, clearances and installation instructions. |

What to Put in the Specification
- Exact identity: manufacturer, product family, model or item code, and the configuration being supplied.
- Movement: concealed or side-mounted, full or partial extension, and whether the selected version has soft-close, push-open or another function.
- Capacity: the manufacturer’s rated capacity for that exact product and the conditions or installation requirements attached to the rating.
- Fit: drawer material and dimensions, cabinet clearances, runner length, and required installation method from the relevant planning document.
- Substitutions: ask the supplier to identify any alternative model in writing and provide its own product information.
Decision Framework
Choose by application and verifiable model details rather than a blanket brand or “premium” label:
- If you prefer a concealed runner: compare the exact concealed model’s fit, extension, motion feature and capacity documentation.
- If you are considering a side-mount runner: check that the cabinet and drawer construction match the model’s mounting and fitting instructions.
- Caramella hardware policy: Blum CLIP top is the primary option and DTC is an alternative, according to the project specification. CLIP top is a hinge family, not a drawer runner model. Ask for the runner itself to be named separately in the quote.
