Quick Answer
Who this page is for: Homeowners comparing kitchen layouts against the measured room, cooking habits and budget.
The path between the sink, cooktop and refrigerator can be a useful planning concept. Check appliance openings and walking routes on the room plan.
Material Standard
Caramella's standard cabinet carcass is ENF plywood unless another material is agreed for the project; edge sealing uses PUR adhesive.
Layout Comparison
Kitchen pricing depends on site measurements, selected materials and fittings, countertop details and agreed scope.
| Layout | Room fit | Example room configuration | Quotation basis |
| Single Wall (I-shape) | Check against the measured room | Studio apartments, wet kitchens, compact spaces | Cabinet runs, layout and selected fittings |
| L-Shaped | Check against the measured room | Two adjacent walls with an open side | Cabinet runs, layout and selected fittings |
| U-Shaped | Check against the measured room | Rooms with three usable wall runs | Cabinet runs, layout and selected fittings |
| Galley | Check against the measured room | Narrow rooms with space for parallel runs | Cabinet runs, layout and selected fittings |
| L-Shape + Island | Check against the measured room | Open-plan rooms with space for an island | Island dimensions, quartz details and fittings |

Single Wall (I-Shape)
Cabinets, appliances, and countertop run along one wall. This can suit compact rooms, depending on the measured plan.
- Considerations: Keeps the cabinetry along one wall and may leave more of the room open for circulation. Check the available work surface and storage against your needs.
- Limitations: Limited counter space. No work triangle — everything is linear. Storage capacity can be limited. Check the work zones and walking path against the room and appliance layout.
- Could suit: Compact rooms or kitchens where cabinets and appliances can be placed on a single wall.
L-Shaped
Cabinets arranged along two adjacent walls forming an L. Check the corner, openings and appliance positions on the measured plan.
- Considerations: Can leave two sides open to the room. Plan the corner and storage access with the cabinet layout.
- Storage options: Ask about available corner fittings and confirm the selected product model and cabinet fit in the specification.
- Design tip: Consider sink position, appliance doors, wall and doorway clearances together on the measured plan.
- Could suit: Rooms with two adjacent walls available for cabinets and work surfaces.
U-Shaped
Cabinets on three walls, creating a horseshoe arrangement. Check the room and access between the runs.
- Considerations: Three cabinet runs can provide several work areas, depending on the selected layout, room size and appliance positions.
- Limitations: Needs enough room for circulation between the runs. Can feel enclosed. Review the clearance between facing runs for the people who use the kitchen and the appliances planned there.
- Design tip: Review sink, cooktop and storage positions together. Ask about available corner fittings and confirm model fit in the project specification.
- Could suit: Rooms where the walls, doors and appliance locations allow three runs.
Galley
Two parallel runs of cabinets face each other. Review how the arrangement fits the room and household routines.
- Considerations: The parallel arrangement has no corner cabinets. Check work zones, appliance doors and the circulation route on the measured plan.
- Limitations: Can feel narrow and enclosed. Consider whether the aisle suits the household's cooking routines and whether the cook faces away from the living area.
- Design tip: Consider the route between washing, preparation and cooking areas. Check window, doorway and appliance positions before approving the layout.
- Could suit: Narrow rooms that have space for parallel cabinet runs and access between them.
L-Shape + Island
An L-shaped perimeter with a freestanding island. Confirm the island's fit and circulation on the measured plan.
- Considerations: An island can add a work surface or seating area if the room allows. Review whether its position suits the household's cooking and circulation needs.
- Limitations: Requires sufficient room for circulation and appliance access. Plan electrical and plumbing services with the relevant trades if the island includes appliances.
- Design tip: Confirm clearances around the island on the measured plan, including doors, drawers, walkways and any seating or appliances.
- Could suit: Open-plan rooms with enough floor area for the island and surrounding walkways.
Which Layout for Your Home?
- Compact rooms: Compare a single-wall arrangement with a small L-shape.
- Rooms with more floor area: Consider L-shape, U-shape or galley layouts in relation to room proportions and appliance locations.
- Open-plan rooms: Assess whether an island fits while keeping circulation and access clear.
- Wet kitchens: Choose a layout that works with the measured room and required plumbing and appliance locations.
Technical Checks Before You Finalize
- On-site measurement first: Layout choice should be locked only after exact wall, window, and column measurements are confirmed.
- Clearances: Confirm working aisles and appliance access on the measured plan for the people who will use the room.
- Linear metre count: Use total cabinet frontage to estimate board volume, hardware count, and cost range more accurately.
- Material details: Confirm carcass material, edge sealing, finish, countertop and kickboard in the project quotation. Caramella's standard kitchen countertop is quartz stone. Confirm the selected kickboard material and base detail in the project quotation.
