Wet kitchens present severe environmental loads that standard dry-kitchen specifications cannot withstand:
Washing ingredients and heavy cooking means water frequently splashes onto cabinet faces and pools near the base.
Intense boiling and frying generate spikes in humidity. Without perfect ventilation, this steam condenses directly onto your cabinets.
Many wet kitchens rely on open windows instead of AC, meaning Brunei's naturally humid air lingers around the cabinets all day long.
If the cabinet edges aren't sealed with high-heat adhesive, moisture seeps into the core, causing the wood to instantly swell and ruin the finish.
The Result: Swollen doors, peeling edges, sticky drawers, and soft spots within just a few years if the materials aren't built for the tropics.
We use premium HPL-surfaced ENF-certified Solid Plywood (not thin Melamine or lower-cost particleboard) with independently verified formaldehyde emissions below 0.010 mg/m³ — the highest safety tier globally. Solid Plywood combined with an industrial HPL layer provides a superior moisture barrier on all face surfaces.
For extreme wet areas (under-sink cabinets), we recommend moisture-resistant plywood or aluminum carcasses.
Every exposed edge is sealed with EVA (Ethylene-vinyl acetate) hot-melt adhesive applied at 180°C–190°C using an automatic edge banding machine. This creates a tight, waterproof bond between the edge tape and the board.
Why it matters: PVC edge tape applied with weak adhesive peels off when exposed to steam and water. EVA bonding resists heat, moisture, and cleaning chemicals.
Drawer boxes are constructed from premium solid boards with pocket-screw joints and edge-sealed on all exposed sides. This prevents moisture entry from daily use.
We use European hinges with nickel-plated or stainless steel finish (Blum or equivalent). Drawer slides are specified for damp environments (DTC or Blum soft-close runners with rusting-resistant coating).

What affects cost: Cabinet length (linear meters), drawer count, material upgrades (moisture-resistant plywood vs HPL surfaced boards), hardware tier (Blum vs DTC), countertop material, and site conditions (difficult access, uneven floors).
Problem: Standard chipboard or low-grade particleboard absorbs moisture like a sponge. Swells, warps, and loses structural integrity.
Fix: Use premium HPL-surfaced Solid Plywood for all carcasses exposed to heavy steam and moisture.
Problem: PVC edge tape applied with low-temperature adhesive peels off in steam and heat.
Fix: EVA edge sealing applied at 180°C–190°C creates a waterproof bond that resists heat and moisture.
Problem: Water pools under base cabinets. Kickboards and cabinet bottoms absorb moisture, leading to rot and mold.
Fix: Use adjustable plastic legs (≥100mm) to lift cabinets off the floor and allow airflow.
Problem: Basic steel hinges and runners rust in humid environments. Doors sag, drawers jam.
Fix: Nickel-plated or stainless steel hinges and rusting-resistant drawer slides (Blum, DTC).
Proper ventilation is critical. If your wet kitchen doesn't have a window or exhaust fan, moisture accumulates inside cabinets and causes damage over time.
Recommendation: Install an exhaust fan or range hood that vents to the outside (not recirculating). For enclosed wet kitchens, consider a ventilation grille above the door.
Ensure your floor has a slight slope toward the floor drain. Water should flow away from cabinets, not pool at the cabinet base.
Wet kitchens often have poor natural light. LED strip lighting under wall cabinets improves visibility and reduces moisture-related shadows where mold can grow unnoticed.
Store frequently used items (oils, seasonings, utensils) in wall cabinets or drawers, not in base cabinets near the floor where humidity is highest.

Quartz composite is the strongest long-term option for wet kitchens because it handles heat, stains, and daily cleaning with less maintenance. Formica is the economy option and can work well when substrate choice, edge sealing, and sink cut-out protection are executed properly.
