Navigating Rimba Constraints
Renovating in the Rimba scheme requires a balance between modernizing the layout and adhering to the Housing Development Department (HDD) and ABCi guidelines. Many original Rimba units feature enclosed, smaller kitchen zones that do not suit modern social cooking habits.
The Dry-Wet Kitchen Conversion
The most effective renovation for Rimba terrace houses is the "Partition Removal" strategy. By safely removing the non-load-bearing wall between the kitchen and dining area, we create a continuous social hub (Dry Kitchen). We then extend the rear for a dedicated, heavy-duty Wet Kitchen.
-
Open-Plan Flow
Integrated seating and island prep zones that maximize the original ground floor footprint.
-
Rear Extension
Specialized Wet Kitchen builds using ENF Plywood to handle heavy frying and steam.
-
Structural Safety
All wall removals must be verified by a Professional Engineer (PE) to ensure building stability.
Material Selection for Rimba
Original Rimba floors often experience moisture wicking. We recommend:
- PVC Kickboards: Essential for preventing water damage during floor washing.
- Blum CLIP top: Necessary for long-term hinge durability in Brunei's humidity.
- Textural PETG: A matte, anti-fingerprint finish that handles the high-traffic nature of family homes.
